What is Osgood Schlatter disease?
Osgood Schlatters disease in children is one of the most common causes 
of
knee pain. It causes tenderness, swelling and pain just below the knee, over the shin bone
(also called the tibia). It occurs mostly in boys who are having a growth spurt (growing
pains). One or both knees may be affected, tibial tuberosity.
What causes Osgood Schlatters disease?
Osgood Schlatters disease is is a difficult problem to understand. It is believed by some to be the pull of the large muscles in the front of the thigh (called the quadriceps). The patellar ligaments join with the quadrece[s, which run through the knee and into the tibias to connect them to the knees. The patellar ligaments can start to pull away from the shin when the quadriceps contractbone, causing pain. Others say the insertion of the patella tendon into the tibia at the tibial tuberosity (where the kneecap tendon inserts into the leg bone) cause inflammation to create the pain, tenderness and a lump of the tuberosity.
