“This is Doctor Cohen.  I have two daughters in high school that are both athletic.   One has Chondromalacia and the other Shin splints.  I have tried everything I know and talked to my associates but no one has an answer.  They are losing confidence in me.  Do these things really work”?  GW,  “yes they work”.  Dr., “Well I will try them, send me three regular wraps”.  Three month later, new customer,  “I want to buy one of your leg wraps, how much are they”.  GW, “ if it is a regular it is $45.00.  Did you find us on the Internet”?  Customer, “no, Doctor Cohen gave me your phone number.”

“ I am a general practitioner in North Carolina and I would like to know what you put in your ankle wraps?  I used a compos so I know they are not magnets.  My wife had an ankle pain for about a year.  I did everything I could think of but nothing seemed to help.  An associate of mine told me about your wraps.  I won’t tell you his name because he is afraid to tell his patients. I bought an ankle wrap for my wife a month ago.  In less than ½ an hour the pain stopped.  Since then she has been hiking and sailing.  I have never seen anything like this."

“I want to order another regular knee wrap.”  GW,  “are you the doctor from Pennsylvania I talked to last week”?  Dr.,  “Yes, I went to physical therapy yesterday and my knee is sore as hell today so I thought I should get another wrap.GW, “did you wear you wrap to physical therapy”?  Dr., “no, I did not wear it all day and my knee flared up this morning.”   GW kidding, “you were embarrassed to wear the wrap in front of the physical therapist?Dr.,  “well, I am not into crystals yet.   I had arthroscopy surgery three months ago and my knee has been a mess every since.  Your knee wrap took the pain and swelling out.  I am a general surgeon not an orthopedic surgeon.”

“I was on your web site and saw the testimonials for compression shorts.  I am a surgeon and when I’ve been in the operating room for a long time my hips and quadriceps get fatigued.  I would like to try a pair of your shorts.”  GW, two months later he ordered three more pair.

    What are shin splints?
Shin splints is a misnomer as the term is not used by doctors, physical therapists or professionals in sports medicine.  This is because shin splints is not a specific diagnosis but a symptom of shin pain sometimes in front and sometimes in back of the shin bone.  However, everyone knows the name in common usage and it does not matter whether it is in front or back of the shin.  The pain from shin splints has many causes such as problems of the bone, the muscle, or the attachment of the muscle to the bone.  The location  has technical references such as Stress fracture, Medial tibial stress syndrome,
Chronic compartment syndromeor Exercise induced compartment syndrome.   All of these technical terms are called shin splints.  Therefore, shin splints is the common name given to pain over the front or back of the lower leg when people are hurting.

The pain from shin splint is at time hard to identify because everyone’s body is different and the mechanics differ slightly. The most common factor occurs when the foot flattens out after the  weight is of the body is applied and the stretching created by overpronation inflammation or tendinitis occurs. Pronation is a normal when the foot flattens slightly or the common foot motion. Overpronation occurs if the flattening of the foot becomes too strenuous and flattened out causing the foot to roll inwards. This excess force causes excess demand on the muscle of the leg and lead to complaints of shin splints.

The term shin splints is not actually a diagnosis as mentioned earlier, but a group of problems causing a typical pain. Therefore, your doctor will perform a careful medical history and physical examination to determine the cause of the shin splints. The area of maxim pain will be different in different runners who have different underlying problems that cause the shin splints.

Shin Splints

They make you think of the bone splitting on your lower leg because of the searing pain you experience as you hit the wall half way through a marathon.

It’s not only the top runners in marathons that suffer.  Anyone that hasn’t shaped up those muscles and goes out in the wrong shoes on bad pavement can find themselves dropping out with tears running down their cheeks.

That is your body telling you to quit before you have a serious stress injury.

It is best to start with stretching exercises to keep out of trouble.  Take a class with a professional to stretch the hamstrings, Achilles tendons and calf muscles.  Also work those lower leg muscles to toughen them up.  Drawing pictures of things with your big toe and doing reverse circles will get great results.

Buying the most expensive shoes you can afford based on the running surface is a very good investment.  Wearing comfortable clothing that keeps your body temperature at the proper level will pay off.  Wearing the latest blasting orange bit of nothing running costume is actually very sensible.  Staying cool and catching the eye of the idiot in the auto bearing down on you, pays off.

But no, you don’t want to bother, so here are some tricks of the trade!

Once you are in trouble and standing along the side of the path there are some things to get some relief until you can make it to the nearest drugs!

Rub your muscles- run your thumbs over the painful muscles, top and sides for a few minutes.  Once they are a little looser, move up and down on your toes.  Your body will naturally seem to ask you to move the muscles to relieve the pain.  Get the blood moving through those muscles.

Once you can take your doctors suggested pain reliever and ice it down you should be working it out.

Then, sign up for the next appointment with a trainer because you won’t want to go through that screaming experience anytime soon.

Relaxing muscles and tendons will relieve Shin Splints.

Almost all runners have pain in the calf or shin at sometime during their life.  Shin splints is common to all runners.  Shin splints is a development mechanism and these injuries are the key to preventing them.  The constant pounding from running presents several types of overuse injuries.

The many terms used for shin splints are irrelevant when the excess of overuse running is judged against one’s usual training routine. Excess and inadequate training that deviates from the usual routine the less time it takes for an overuse injury to develop. With this concept in mind one can now examine the specifics for how shin splints develop.

A running surface that is hard has the greater the shockwave.  The foot delivers a shock that travels up the leg.  This energy must be absorbed by the musculoskeletal system.  The running mechanics shows a foot-strike, a loading/energy transfer phase, and finally a push with the forefoot.  Training concrete is very hard on the body and should be avoided.  Smooth dirt, grass, and concrete represent increasing hardness.

Support for the biomechanics of endurance running is specifically designedby distance running shoes to provide padding. The shock is absorb shock and facilitate efficient energy transfer. These types of running shoes offer an athlete specific biomechanics, and proper shoe fit. The shock absorbing capacity of worn out shoes is limited.  High rigid arches in runners tend to experience greater pounding shock, those with flat feet experience greater fatigue from the muscles. Both types of runners tend to develop shin splints

A runner will describe a pain  in the early stage of shin splints that is present when the training run first begins, as rimming customizes it disappears.  After exercise the pain will often return or the following morning.  The athlete will experience more pain as the injury progresses with time, and less time without it. Frequently a tender area on the edge of the the tibia that can be identified by pressing the fingertips along the bone. Eventually the pain may become sharp and may focus on the bone. If this happens a stress fracture should be considered.

It may be necessary to completely stop running, depending upon severity, for a period of time. On a day-to-day basis this is done until the activities is pain free. The routine that lead to the injury must be significantly studied to make sure the injured runner does not make \the same mistake as the initial problem.   The concept of relative rest can often substitute cross-training activities such as bicycling for running.  There should be a graded and gradual increase in run training, keeping an eye out for the return of any shin splint symptoms.

Advanced Wraps Used by Varsity and Professional Athletes

Doctors prefer terms such as lower leg stress, posterior tibial syndrome, periostitis or tendinitis to shin splints.  Irrespective of what you call it, it really means that your shins ache and hurt.  Pain in the front or inside part of the lower leg are shin splints. The muscles of the lower leg where they attaché to the bone becomes inflamed, or Tendinitis.

Runner.gif (2102 bytes)Shin splints often arise because people tend to overdo it, especially when it comes to exercise. But exercise is important if you are an athlete, particularly a varsity athlete. The Goode Wraps have been used by a number of Universities to solve shin splints.  Two of these are BYU and Clemson.  A number of exercise programs can lead to aches and pains, and sometimes a trip to the trainer for treatment of an exercise-related injury. Basketball players, for instance, often complain of pain in the shins, otherwise known as shin splints. Soccer players, tennis players and others who participate in sports that involve a lot of running get shin splints, too.

Basketball players starting the season start and stop quickly adding great stress to the lower legs.  Some shin splints occur because people do not have proper training habits.  Problems in training may be caused by faulty or the wrong equipment, sometimes the shoes. Another error is changing training routines without allowing time for the body to adjust.   Shin Splints often show up at the beginning of the year.

Posterior tibial  in the front portion of the legs, account for about 75% of the problems affecting athletes.  Tibial periostitis occurs further toward the back of the leg than posterior tibial shin splints, and the bone itself is tender.  Anterior compartment syndrome affects the outer side of the front of the leg.

I wanted to let you know what a wonderful product your knee wrap is.  I have a 14 year daughter who playsBsktball.gif (2375 bytes) basketball, volleyball and softball (at the same time) and was suffering from shin splints and patella tendinitis.  I ordered one of the knee wraps and in 3 days the swelling was completely gone.  From time to time it will reoccur and she will immediately put the wrap on.  Usually in less than 12 hours she is as good as new.  Recently she suffered a deep thigh bruise and moved the knee wrap up to the thigh and in 2 days it was as good as new.  I just ordered a second knee wrap because she wants to wear one on each knee every night to prevent any further pain associated with the patella tendinitis.  It is a great product for my child and I will continue to recommend it to all of my friends.
